Darkness
I didn't watch the Super Bowl last night. Instead, I watched a great football movie, "We Are Marshall." But it didn't take long to hear news of the great blackout. In fact, before it was over, advertisers were already taking advantage of it and posting things on social media, offering "solutions" to the blackout. Funny how quickly those things can happen these days!
We've had our own blackouts at the church. Who remembers the day when the lights went out for the Christmas cantata? Luckily, we had some very resourceful folks who got a generator up and running for the first two services. Wanda prayed the lights back on for the third service!
But, then again, we're in the "light" business, aren't we? John, in the prologue to his Gospel, tells us that Jesus is the light of the world, and that the light came to shine in the darkness (1:5; see also John 8:12). It is amazing, isn't it, how one light, no matter how small, can pierce through the darkness? One light makes a difference. And when the light is Jesus, the light that comes is meant to light up the whole world and push back all of the darkness.
Jesus has put his light in you and me, and he calls us to shine it out. Together, the body of Christ is called to push back the darkness. So how are you shining today? How are you pushing back the darkness? May you shine the light of Christ through all that you do today.
