Miley
There has been a lot of vitual ink spilled in the last few days over Miley Cyrus and her...well, her performance at the VMAs. I didn't watch it, still haven't seen the whole thing though I have seen clips on the news and heard a lot about the controversy. Some people are saying it's a publicity stunt. Probably. Others says it's about her breaking free from her Disney image. Certainly--though I don't hear about her returning the checks she likely still gets from that Disney image. Some condemn. Some applaud. Others, like me, just shake their heads in frustration.
My daughter is one of those who used to idolize Miley. She loved her on Hannah Montana. She liked her music then. We drove quite a distance to see the concert movie she made. And we believed her when she said she was a Christian and loved Jesus. I don't know where Miley's faith is now, but if her public persona is to be believed...well, I know Jesus still loves Miley.
There isn't much I can add to what's already been said elsewhere and better. But I can't get out of my head a song Bebo Norman wrote several years about about another young pop star, Britney Spears. I think Bebo's sentiments toward Britney then apply to Miley now.

Britney, I'm sorry for the lies we told
We took you into our arms, then left you cold
Britney, I'm sorry for this cruel, cruel world
We sell the beauty but destroy the girl
We took you into our arms, then left you cold
Britney, I'm sorry for this cruel, cruel world
We sell the beauty but destroy the girl
Britney, I'm sorry for your broken heart
We stood aside and watched you fall apart
I'm sorry we told you fame would fill you up
And money moves the man, so drink the cup
We stood aside and watched you fall apart
I'm sorry we told you fame would fill you up
And money moves the man, so drink the cup
Britney, I'm sorry for the stones we throw
We tear you down just so we can watch the show
Britney, I'm sorry for the words we say
We point the finger as you fall from grace
We tear you down just so we can watch the show
Britney, I'm sorry for the words we say
We point the finger as you fall from grace
Words & Music by Bebo Norman and Jason Ingram
That last line especially gets to me. We point the finger (something Christians are always good at) as you fall from grace. I pray for Miley, and for others like her, for there is no where they can run that God can't find them, that God's love won't pursue them. I pray they turn around and find what real love is like.
